The yay retro! online shop specialises in selling vintage wares from the 1940s to 1970s. Also available are some superb display racks ideal for all sorts of bits and bobs as well as for spice jars. These come with fixings to put them up on the wall, however they are also perfect as free-standing items. As you can see all of these are a fab way to show off a collection of kitsch treasures. yay retro! know how much you are all enjoying the framed pictures we are putting into our online vintage shop at the moment. This week I've added some gorgeous fabric pictures designed by Felicity Lewis for Galt Toys in the 60/70s. They are printed on to cotton as they were originally in a baby's rag book.
The book was a bit tired, and I didn't want to waster the amazing illustrations which have all been printed on to cotton. So it seemed that the best thing was to frame them up in gorgeous white box frames. Look out for the cutest birds and Daisy the cow in her flower power field...
There are also pictures of ducks, a Mummy and child and this super lady walking her dog on an Autumn day. The frames can be stood on a shelf as they are 1 inch deep, or else hung on the wall r propped using the integral stand on the back. So versatile and the perfect gift or treat. Take a look at all the framed pictures yay retro! have for sale right now here. Don't forget I always combine postage on multiple picture orders.

yay retro! love to feature the work of artists whose work we admire, and over the past year I have been following Clover Robin a Print Pattern Designer and Artist. Clover's detailed collages can be bought as individual artworks, cards and prints; happily Clover agreed to a little interview for the yay retro! blog. I hope you enjoying reading and taking a look at Clover's glorious work....
Clover tells me that she was born in Bridport, Devon and lived there until she was 7, she recalls walking to the beach after school. Later her family moved to Exeter and lived close to the river, where she could see the rolling hills from her bedroom window. Every weekend was about beach walking or heading out to the moors....She says: "I always knew I loved being outdoors and wide open spaces but never so much as now that I am living in London. As a result my work has become really botanical, featuring landscapes reminiscent of my childhood".
"London can be a tough cookie and a bit of a concrete jungle which makes the lovely natural spaces and parks particularly special. There is a huge amount of green space here and living next to Greenwich Park I'm constantly influenced by the stunning flower and rose gardens"
Clover studied surface pattern design at BA level in Leeds: "Surface pattern is awesome because it basically means applying any pattern to any surface. People usually choose to specialise in fashion or interiors, but I love to see the crossovers in both. While I'm pursuing illustration more at the moment, I LOVE wallpaper and would definitely like to create something in this realm at some point".
I asked Clover how she came up with her ideas: "There's inspiration everywhere, other than the all the outdoorsy stuff I mentioned earlier, I'm a sucker for a beautiful design shop. I love books and could sift for hours through the styling pages on Pinterest!"
Clover's working process really depends on what she's working on and where she is, though she says: "I'm never happier than when I'm out and about with my sketchbook and little bag of paper cuttings and scissors".
Usually she says, she starts by researching the project, finding lots of inspiring imagery, looking at colours, shapes and textures. From this she starts creating and sourcing the papers for her artwork which can take minutes or hours depending on the different elements. Then she translates all the ideas and elements of the work on the page. This can have quite surprising results which is what makes each piece completely unique.
Once done, she scans everything in to the computer to clean it up, adjust scale and size, hues and contrasts to create the special look and feel of her work.
Music is a great way to stay focussed one her work and she loves to sing along to old 90s indie music. Someone recently suggested Baroque music for focus and optimum proactivity - although she was sceptical, she found it really works!
She goes on to say: "I have a small but ever growing collection of vintage-y vases and jugs so all of the vintage jugs yay retro! have for sale appeal to me...There's also a particularly delightful red enamel teapot I could probably find a home for too!"
Recently we've had a lot of customers ask us to start selling vintage toys. So we've been out hunting for vintage Galt Toys, Spears Games and also Fisher Price. Like you we prefer the older Fisher Price toys from the 1960 & 70s, these were often made with a wooden body and then paper decals. Sometimes these also have plastic additions. People love these toys as they can recall playing with them, themselves.
A key example would be the Fisher Price Little Snoopy Dog who has to be the cutest pull along dog available! He carries a little wooden shoe and has bright orange wheels designed to make him wobble along. Another popular 1960s pull along is the turtle who has big orange feet and a red top hat. Many people like to buy these as ornaments as well as to pop in the toy box for their children or grandchildren.
Other early 60s designs include the Fisher Price fire engine from 1963, this has an extendable ladder and a wooden driver. In 1969 the red minibus was launched, this is brilliant for camper van lovers, and we can imagine it on display in any van drivers home, or maybe in their van itself! What a great gift for a VW owner this would make. Fill it with Fisher Price mini people and you are away! In the 70s further vehicles were added to the Fisher Price range such as the Mini copter in 1972. We adore this one as it has a little girl and a dog looking out of the windows making it extra cute on display.
One of the most sought after Fisher Price toys is the Bluebird musical box. People love to hang this on their walls. It is hard to find these in the UK, they normally turn up in the USA, perhaps suggesting this was the main place they were sold?
Fisher Price made garages, farms, zoos, houses, trains and schools and all of these were populated by the Fisher Price little people. These figures come in all designs, with some being more sought after than others. Grandma is a special one as are the clowns, the people who do particular jobs and the village people styled figures. People collect these as they are a great size to pop on display in a vintage collection, for instance in a printers tray.
yay retro! have lots of Fisher Price little people in cars and with furniture sets such as a teacher with her school desk, the postman with his post van and mail box and a mum and her baby with nursery furniture and pushchair. We have even had the must-have Fisher Price sewing machine - this of course sold immediately! However we have another on it's way so do keep a look out in the yay retro! shop.
