The results are in and apparently hot chocolate tastes better in an orange cup with a white interior!
Betina Piqueras-Fiszman, a researcher at the Universitat Politecnica de Valencia in Spain and the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, asked 57 people to taste hot chocolate in 4 different coloured plastic cups - white, cream orange and red (the cups were white inside). Results showed that participants in the study thought that the chocolate tasted better out of the orange cup! I wonder why they didn't include a green and a blue cup?
Anyhow, the article on the CBS news website goes on to say that when people perceive taste, it is affected by many external factors aside from the food itself. Past research has shown that price, food descriptions and the way it is presented can all affect our enjoyment of it, highlighting the importance of great tableware on our mood and enjoyment of our meals.
