January 2018 Degustabox Foodie review by yay retro!

Hi I'm Sue and I run the yay retro! online vintage shop. I am really lucky to be involved with reviewing the lovely food boxes from Degustabox each month, so here goes for January 2018!  Degustabox is a monthly subscription where you get from 10 to 15 surprise foods to try, it's a great way to expand your food repertoire and in the 6 months I've been getting them, we've added lots of new foods and brands to our shopping list.

See below for a special Degustabox voucher code, especially for yay retro! blog readers to join in the fun and surprises get money off your first box.

This box was full of protein rich foods as well as some diet ideas to try.  I am aiming to add more protein to my diet and will try to cut back on the carbs this year, so this couldn't have come at a better time.

Jordans Juicy Red Berry Fruisli Bar

This was the first thing I ate when I opened the box. I love to have light lunches which are packed full of goodness, so instead of having some bread or crackers with my cheese and celery I had a Fruisli bar. At just over 118 calories per bar these are a healthy treat which are packed full of zingy bright tasting fruits. This is definitely something I am going to start buying. These are made from oats, cranberries, strawberries, blueberries and raisins and so have lots of vitamins and fibre inside - great!

Explore Cuisine Organic Edamame & Mung Bean Fettucine

We dived into this box of protein rich Fettucine the same evening our Degustabox arrived. What a great idea for vegetarians this is - an easy way to ensure you're getting your protein is to swop this for regular pasta as it is made from beans. It has a nice texture and a jolly green colour, and when cooked you are hard pushed to know this isn't regular pasta, though it does have more of a chewiness to it. I made up a recipe for the sauce which worked well using mushrooms, pepper, onion and tomatoes...here it is if you wish to give it a try:

To serve 2:
Chop and Fry small green pepper and a chopped onion with garlic and chilli
Then add 4 quartered field mushrooms
Season with S&P to taste
When soft and golden add a tin of chopped tomatoes and a tablespoon of tomato puree
Simmer until cooked through and serve with some soft cheese as a topping

Hersheys Cookies N Creme Snack Pack

These are completely delicious small treats of white chocolate with cookie pieces in them. They are very sweet, and so give you a massive rush - very more-ish. We ate the whole pack in minutes between us. High calorie, so an absolute treat for us and perhaps we would buy instead of a box of chocolates.

Pulsin Vanilla Choc Protein Booster

I really like Pulsin products having tried them in previous Degustaboxes. This one is a small chunky block of fudge, which tastes of peanut butter and had that kind of consistency. Really lovely and you feel like it's doing you goof. Being protein packed it kept me full for ages. It's vegan, dairy, soya and gluten free, and has no added sugar. At 230 calories per bar you may want to use this as a sandwich substitute over a lunchtime or something. It's high in fibre and gas 13gm of plant based protein in it in the form of almonds, cashews and peas. I liked this a lot however my husband didn’t like texture and consistency.

Mahtay Yerba Mate Sparkling Tea

This is a nice alternative to a cup of tea, and would be great on a summers day or as a treat when not drinking at a party. Nice and refreshing, it had a zing to it and I found that coconut was the main flavour after a few mouthfuls. It's made with coconut water along with acai berries.

Mallow & Marsh Coconut Marhsmallow Bar

This is a large squidgey chunk of marshmallow smothered in dessicated coconut. It melts in your mouth and would be super dunked into a hot chocolate! These bars are handmade and come in at under a 100 calories each - yumtastic for all those crazy about marshmallow!

Wild Planet Albacore Wild Tuna Steaks

This is the second time Degustabox have included this brand of tuna in their boxes, and I was thrilled to receive it again. This is the most stunning tasting tuna ever. I am not a fish lover but I do make myself eat it as much as possible as I know how healthy it is. We have actually bought a huge box of this direct from Wild Planet online to keep in our larder as it is stand out amazing! Not only does it taste different to other canned tuna fish, it is line caught and as such is ranked #1 by Greenpeace for sustainability.

Clipper Everyday Tea with 50p off Coupon

This was a lovely sample size box of 10 teabags. It's an organic tea in a non-bleached teabag. Nice taste, though I actually prefer a stronger and cheaper tea.

Latin American Kitchen by Santa Maria Chipotle Mayo Topping

This has a very unusual hot, smoky, spicy flavour and it could be used on wraps or even your every day salads and sandwiches. It wasn't for me as it was a tad too quirky.

Santa Maria American Kitchen Columbian Crunchy Chicken Bites Seasoned Corn Coating

We used this tasty coating on Quorn Fillets. I defrosted them and cut them into chunks. Then in a box coated them in oil and then with the coating and baked until cooked through. We liked them and had them with refried bean and vegetable wraps. The coating was delicious, but was very salty so a treat rather than a regular thing I think.

LighterLife Fast Ready to Drink Shakes x 2

These shakes are part of the diet range from Superdrug. The idea is you replace your meals with 4 of these shakes two days a week on what they call their Fast plan diet. They can also be used as a protein hit if you are not into dieting.  This tastes very sweet and has a certain feel and taste to it. Not really my thing, but I can see it may also be good to build people up after a bout of flu etc.

Pulsin Vanilla Whey Protein Powder

This is a vanilla flavoured whey protein powder which is high in protein and calcium, it's vegetarian and low in fat with no added sugar. The idea is that you add it to milk or water to create a healthy shake. Come back soon to see what I thought.

Robinsons Fruit Cordial

I got the Raspberry, Rhubarb & Orange Blossom flavour. It is more syrupy than regular squashes and tastes posh and different. It has quite a nice perfumey aroma and feels like a treat - made from real fruit, this is a nice alternative to heavy fruit juices at your dinner table.
