Back in the 1950/60s it was ultra chic to have a pineapple ice bucket in your sideboard or on your very own bar in your lounge. Having a cheeky tipple with friends was considered to be 'posh', and with little or no thought to drink driving, people hosted parties at their homes as a regular thing.
With tropical foreign holidays being an unattainable dream for many people, the image of the pineapple became an aspirational motif for many and it began to appear as a pattern on tablewares, such as this adorable Myott 'Hawaii' lidded pot.
Fruity cruet sets were also created, such as this adorable salt and pepper set which includes a pineapple mustard pot. Nowadays, many people would cheerfully have this on display as an ornament in their vintage home, although it would be marvellous to use every day at your dinner table.
In recent years the pineapple has made a comeback and you can buy modern copies of vintage pineapples everywhere. I always think it's best to have original vintage pineapples and these Villeroy & Boch pineapple shaped salt and pepper pots are completely amazing, making a superb gift or treat for anyone crazy about pineapples!
