Here are the European Actual Bed Sizes
Single 90 x 190cm
Double 140 x 190cm
King 160 x 200cm
Super King 200 x 200cm
Knowing the actual bed measurements is helpful as you can then know if a bedcover you've found will drape across your bed. In the past bedcovers were designed to cover the whole of the bed right to the floor, this means that even a vintage single bed cover could be used on a double bed, it just won't drape in the same way.
Vintage bedding normally only goes up to a double size as Super King was unheard of at the time and King size was introduced quite late on with few people having a bed that size.
Here are the European Flat Sheet Sizes
Single 180 x 260cm
Double 220 x 260cm
King 265 x 275cm
Super King 280 x 290cm
Using the measurements above you can easily work out which size bed your vintage sheet will fit.
If like me you have a Super King bed, do not despair, you can still enjoy vintage bedding. Buy vintage pillow cases and use them with contemporary Super King bedding sets. This mix and match approach can work really well. Additionally a Double or even a Single sheet can be folded lengthways and draped over the end of the bed as a contrasting throw to add some vintage interest to your bedroom as seen below on our Super King.
Here's the same bed with a vintage Single sheet used as a complete bed cover, as you'll see there's a lot more fabric than you'd think in a single flat sheet and it's a fabulous way to get vintage bedding on to your Super King.
If you fancied making your own duvet covers from vintage sheets then these sizes may be helpful to you:
Standard measurements for Duvets
This means that you might just be able to make a Super King Duvet cover from two Double sheets sewn together, it may be a bit tight but perhaps worth investigating? Certainly you would be able to make a Double or Single Duvet using vintage sheets.
