Vintage Melamine - Camper Vans, Caravans, Glamping & Kitchens at yay retro!

Do you have a vintage VW camper? A Sprite Caravan? A Commer, Bedford CF or even a Bongo Frendee? yay retro! have some great vintage melamine for sale which is not only perfect for every day use in your vintage kitchen at home, it works exceptionally well when you are out and about on the road.

It is interesting to note that melamine was originally designed to be made for the home as a replacement to breakable china tablewares. Surprisingly therefore, you will find potteries such as Midwinter actually made a range of melamine wares! The most popular make was and still is Gaydon Melmex, so yay retro! we always try to include items from the original Gaydon range including butter dishes, sugar bowls, jugs and egg cups in our shop.

Melamine from the 1960s and 70s is light, resilient and also very bright and cheery. It was made back in the day that people were amazed they could go on holiday really easily by hitching up a caravan or kitting out a commercial van as a camper, and it has naturally found it's way into many people's collective holiday memories. Cast your mind back to a time when many people had only just begun to own a car, and were used to taking the train to holiday camps and restrictive B&B's, and you can imagine the impact of caravans and camper vans on people's sense of freedom in the 1960s!

Alongside tablewares, companies such as Marks & Spencer, Taunton Vale and Thetford made superb Flower Power trays in the 1960s & 70s. These complement melamine and plastic tablewares wonderfully well, and of course we have a fabulous range of vintage floral trays available to buy in our shop here.  Trays are a great way to add an instant *ping* of colour to your home or van, and are not only useful but ideal to create visual displays.

It's worth giving Emsa a mention too. This high quality plastic was made in Germany in the 60s & 70s and rivals melamine in it's endurance and quality. Emsa made cups, saucers, coffee pots, butter dishes and cruet sets and again are a brand yay retro! love to sell. Above is a flowery Emsa butter dish and I think you will agree it looks amazing next to the St Michael (M&S) floral tray.

We choose the very best vintage melamine and plastic tablewares to sell in our online vintage shop. Our selection includes vintage Gaydon Melmex, Emsa, Thetford, Taunton Vale and vintage M&S. Use the links below to help you find what you are looking for:
