Charlotte Rhead and the 1930s at yay retro!

When I buy stock for yay retro! my rule of thumb is to buy in what I personally love. So although I concentrate on items from the 1940s to the 1970s, a few items can sneak in which are a tad older!  This week I bought in a stunning Charlotte Rhead ornamental jug. I simply love Rhead's work which was created in the 1920s and 30s, particularly her works with orange falling leaves on them. Rhead is highly collectable and worked at the same time as Clarice Cliff, Susie Cooper and Truda Carter, all notable makers for the key potteries in the UK. You cn take a look at this gorgeous Charlotte Rhead jug here.

The other interesting older piece I purchased for yay retro! this week was a fabby Art Deco ice bucket. This comes with a bakelite handle and is the epitome of glitz and glam. The Art Deco period ranged over the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s.  Art Deco works combine traditional craft techniques with 'machine age' iconography and imagery. So you often find angular, geometric shapes as with this funky ice bucket. These items were made to last and so it was not unusual to find them in homes right up to the 1950s and into the 60s. Take a look at the ice bucket here.
