The wonderful work of ceramicist Shirley Vauvelle

Here at yay retro! we just love the work of Shirley Vauvelle. About 18 months ago I was really lucky to win a piece of Shirley's work which was very exciting indeed! Since then I have been following Shirley's Facebook page and watching how her work has developed over time.
Shirley has been a professional designer/maker for over 10 years. She graduated from Leicester Polytechnic in 1989, and now that her family have been raised, she is working full time creating her gorgeous ceramic sculptures and also painting.

The work she creates can either be hung on the wall, or are free standing sculptures in a variety of sizes from teeny upwards. She makes flowers, animals, birds and fish from white earthenware, then applies oxides to develop layers of colour. The resulting pieces are then created into an assemblage which may feature household objects, driftwood, wire, reclaimed vintage images and maps and even finds from local beaches.
Shirley says her inspiration comes from: "her garden, the seaside, and country walks. She has a love of turquoise, and ideas can also come from Scandinavian & Naïve art".
What I love about Shirley's work is the layering of colour and texture, to create a history to the piece. Her dreamlike, minimal artworks 'speak to you' - telling a meaningful story to each individual viewer.

Working in a studio based in her garden near to the East Coast of Yorkshire, Shirley is happy to take commisions and can offer a bespoke service using maps of particular locations. We think her work is ideal as a treat, or as an extra special gift to celebrate birthday, anniversaries, weddings, and much more. Why not take a look at Shirley Vauvelle's website here.
