Mid Century Inspired Jewellery from Bird Modern Vintage
Here's another great arty find on Facebook, the wonderful retro inspired jewellery by Jeanette from Bird Modern Vintage... Jeanette makes the most wonderful brooches, cufflinks, necklaces and earrings all decorated in 1950s-70s patterns in the shape of birds, flowers, cups and saucers, teapots and coffee pots!
Jeanette is Head of Art and Textiles in a school in Somerset, and when she is not busy teaching others how to tap into their creativity, she works as a 'shrink plastic artist.' Bird Modern Vintage was started 2 years ago, when the use of shrink plastic was very experimental; the baking process often destroyed hours of work (yikes!) However, 2 years down the line...she has mastered the skill and now creates really stunning glossy jewellery which borrow from Mid Century Modern and Scandinavian home and tableware designs.
Jeanette says she has always collected things that are retro and vintage, including fabric, ceramics, furniture, dress patterns and of course, teapots and coffee pots. As you can see by the photos, the shapes and patterns of J&G Meakin, Catherine Holm, Villeroy & Boch and Scandi styling all play a part in the development of her work. We've shown Bird Modern Vintage pieces next to some of the vintage wares yay retro! sell to illustrate this :O)
Jeanette works with a material called shrink plastic. Each piece is hand drawn and painted in watercolour paint. It is then baked and glazed. The hand drawn nature allows her to capture tiny details. She says, her "very first experiment was based on a retro teapot . The shapes I use are influenced by my own collection of teapots and coffee pots, but I also use things that I spot online, including some of the gorgeous things on yay retro! Once the shape is decided, the design is then added with a flavour of vintage wallpaper motifs, fabrics and ceramics."
Jeanette is currently developing the 'Bird' brand and creating some textile work using some of her huge fabric collection, these include some fabulous designs using vintage barkcloth, you can see them on Bird Modern Vintage's Facebook page.
Bird Modern Vintage pieces are sold via Jeanette's Etsy shop and Facebook, through a few shops and Jeanette also loves to sell direct to the public at vintage fair and other events :O) Why not pop over to see all that Bird Modern Vintage gets up to, or nip into yay retro! for a browse now.
