yay retro! meets artist Kate from KateCreates

Followers of the yay retro! blog will know that from time to time I meet amazingly talented people and artists, just by wandering around on Facebook (a highly recommended activity!) Recently, I found the work of KateCreates, Kate is an artist and illustrator who lives in Worcestershire. The pieces that really drew my attention first of all were her fantastically detailed and extremely cute biscuit paintings!

Who doesn't adore biscuits? A framed watercolour of a custard cream or Tunnocks Mallow seems to me to be the perfect 'happy' pick me up and gift idea. I think a whole row of these in your kitchen would look amazing.

Kate studied Illustration at Hereford College of Art and Design. In 2006  she says she began painting small commissions, and created one off watercolours. Now she specialises in personalised cards and paintings for all occasions, and also produces signed limited edition prints and fine art cards. Believe it or not Kate also makes hand drawn biscuity brooches! We love the fun and humour in her work and the level of detail and care.

There is another aspect of Kate's work which we love, and that is her paintings of buildings, these have a clever layered technique. With these works, she was invited to exhibit at Jelly Pebbles in Liskeard and the popularity of her building and harbour paintings has grown from there.

Kate says she has few vintage pieces at home. Her Dad is an antique bottle collector, so she has some vintage glass ware and also a lovely vintage soda syphon. Also a collection of vintage tins and packaging. She follows the yay retro! Facebook page, and says she is a massive fan of Fiona Gurney's mosaic pieces that we sell in the yay retro! online shop.  She says they are "unique and beautifully made, I'd love one of those. Definitely one for my birthday list!"

As you can see, it really is worth taking a look at the KateCreate's Facebook pageEtsy Store and website to see the extent of her range - it's not just biscuits!)

Above...one of KateCreates layered building paintings, and a unique mosaic bird from Fiona Gurney which Kate covets, and we have for sale in the yay retro! shop :O)
